Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has reaffirmed Singapore's commitment to Tamil as a living language, addressing the Singapore Tamil Teachers' Union (STTU) on its 75th anniversary. Wong acknowledged the unique challenges facing Tamil in a society where English increasingly dominates homes, schools, and workplaces, noting that Tamil students have fewer natural opportunities to use the language beyond the classroom.
The Prime Minister praised Tamil educators for transmitting not just vocabulary and grammar, but stories, values, and cultural heritage. He highlighted innovative teachers using AI tools, chatbots, and interactive methods to keep the language engaging for students, including those with special needs.
Wong credited STTU with advancing professional development, establishing the World Tamil Teachers Conference in 1992, and partnering with MediaCorp on *Tamizhil Yosi Tamizhil Vaasi* (Think in Tamil, Read in Tamil) to position Tamil as a language for communication and creativity, not just exams.
He called for a whole-of-society approach, with teachers, organizations, parents, and media all playing roles in ensuring Tamil continues to flourish for future generations in Singapore, one of the few countries where Tamil holds official status.
