Assam Miya Parishad Urges Community to List Assamese

The Assam Miya (Asomiya) Parishad has rejected appeals encouraging Miya Muslims to declare Bengali rather than Assamese as their mother tongue in the upcoming Census. At a press conference in Dekachang, General Secretary M. Muktar Mondal termed such appeals *"illogical, baseless and anti-community,"* alleging they are part of a conspiracy to mislead indigenous Miya Muslims of Kamrupi origin.

Mondal emphasized that the Miya community identifies as Assamese and lives peacefully in the state, calling Assam *"like a heaven for the Miya community."* He stressed that language identity should not be linked to issues of discrimination or injustice.

The Parishad has urged community members to identify as "Miya" and record Assamese as their mother tongue in the Census, warning against what they describe as attempts to push the community toward uncertainty. The statement highlights ongoing debates about linguistic identity and Census enumeration in Assam's multilingual landscape.
