Charan Hembram, a distinguished Santali writer, has been honored with the Padma Shri for his lifelong contribution to indigenous literature and language preservation. Born into a Santhal tribal family, Hembram dedicated himself to writing poems, essays, and stories in Santali, transforming oral folk narratives into written literature while maintaining their authentic spirit.
His work has been instrumental in promoting literacy in Santali, particularly among younger generations, fostering pride and identity within the community. Hembram's contributions helped build the intellectual foundation that led to Santali's inclusion in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution in 2003, demonstrating the language's capacity for rich literary expression.
Beyond writing, Hembram has engaged in grassroots cultural work, documenting traditions and mentoring young writers. His recognition with the Padma Shri acknowledges not only his personal achievements but also highlights the importance of preserving indigenous languages and cultures in India's diverse linguistic landscape.
