Konkani Language Champion N. Purushothama Mallya Dies at 97

N. Purushothama Mallya, a veteran Konkani language activist and Padma Shri awardee, passed away at 97 following a brief illness at his residence near TD Temple in Cheralayi.

Mallya was best known for founding and serving as honorary secretary of the *Konkani Bhasha Prachar Sabha*, an organisation dedicated to promoting and preserving the Konkani language. Over decades of public life, he led sustained campaigns advocating that Konkani be recognised as a national language, while also pushing for the Konkani-speaking community in Keralam to be granted linguistic minority status, a demand tied closely to safeguarding the community's cultural and educational rights.

His contributions to Konkani language activism earned him the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian honours, cementing his legacy as a lifelong champion of linguistic identity and preservation.

He is survived by his wife, Sarojini Bai, daughter Sushmitha Mallya Rao, and son Nagesh P. Mallya. His death marks the loss of a prominent voice in Konkani linguistic advocacy in Keralam.
