Maharashtra's Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced that over one lakh non-Marathi speaking taxi and auto rickshaw drivers have completed a functional Marathi proficiency course since the state government introduced a mandatory language requirement. From May 1, 2026, all drivers must demonstrate basic proficiency in Maharashtra's official language.
The initiative, launched on Maharashtra Day under the *Hinduhhridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Marathi Shikvani Abhiyan*, is being jointly implemented by the state Marathi Language Department, Mumbai Marathi Sahitya Sangh, and Konkan Marathi Sahitya Parishad. The campaign has received encouraging response statewide, with drivers enrolling voluntarily.
Minister Sarnaik urged remaining drivers, including those working for app-based taxi services, to complete their training by August 15. He emphasized that the initiative is about cultural connection rather than compulsion, stating that drivers who communicate in Marathi become ambassadors of Maharashtra's culture while earning their livelihood in the state.
