Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Malaysia highlighted the significant role of Tamil language and culture in strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations. Speaking alongside Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim in Kuala Lumpur, Modi emphasized how Tamil serves as a powerful connector between the countries.
Modi noted that Tamil's "strong and living presence" is evident throughout Malaysian society - in education, media, and cultural life. He expressed confidence that the newly signed Audio Visual Agreement would facilitate greater cultural exchange, particularly through Tamil films and music.
The Prime Minister's address at the 'Selamat Datang Modiji' event, attended by over 12,000 people from the Indian diaspora, highlighted Malaysia's position as home to the second-largest Indian-origin community globally. He praised the community for preserving their traditions over centuries, including maintaining over 500 schools teaching Indian languages.
Modi described Tamil as "India's gift to the world," noting its eternal literature and global cultural impact. To further strengthen these cultural bonds, he announced the establishment of a Thiruvalluvar centre, building upon the existing Thiruvalluvar Chair at the University of Malaya.
