On August 20, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang used the occasion of *Bhasha Manyata Diwas 2026* to make a renewed appeal for the protection of the Nepali language, urging the younger generation to take greater ownership of their mother tongue.
Tamang described the inclusion of Nepali in the *Eighth Schedule* of the Indian Constitution as a landmark achievement that shaped the identity of the Nepali-speaking community. He paid tribute to the writers, linguists, scholars, activists, and political leaders whose sustained efforts secured this constitutional recognition.
Framing language as the anchor of history, culture, and tradition, the Chief Minister called for a collective effort to pass these roots on to future generations, strengthening the state's literary and cultural heritage. He reiterated that the Sikkim government remains committed to protecting the state's languages alongside its diverse cultures, attire, and community identities.
The day concluded with Tamang extending his best wishes for peace, prosperity, and progress to Nepali speakers around the world.
