Eminent Tamil poet and lyricist R Vairamuthu was conferred the 60th Jnanpith Award for 2025, India's highest literary honour, at a ceremony in New Delhi. The award was presented by former Union minister Karan Singh on Vairamuthu's birthday.
Vairamuthu becomes the third Tamil writer and the first Tamil poet to receive this prestigious recognition. He received a cash prize of Rs 11 lakh, a bronze statue of Vagdevi (Goddess Saraswati), and a citation. In his acceptance speech, he dedicated the honour to the Tamil language and Indian literature, describing literature as *humanity's greatest source of hope, compassion and moral strength*.
Vairamuthu's literary contributions span poetry, novels, essays and film lyrics. His novel *Kallikkattu Ithikasam* won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2003. He has received seven National Film Awards for Best Lyrics and has been honoured with Padma Shri (2003) and Padma Bhushan (2014). His works have been translated into English, German, Russian and Norwegian.
The Jnanpith Award, instituted in 1961, recognizes outstanding lifetime contribution to Indian literature.
