The Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) has taken a significant step towards indigenous language preservation by introducing Dimasa (Elective) as a new subject at the secondary level. The initiative will begin with Class IX in the 2026-2027 academic session and extend to Class X the following year.
Students opting for Dimasa (Elective) will study it in place of the Modern Indian Language (MIL), with the subject structure comprising 50 per cent English (Second Language) and 50 per cent Dimasa. However, students who choose Dimasa as their MIL will not be permitted to select it again as an additional elective subject.
The NC Hills Autonomous Council will provide prescribed textbooks for the new subject. This move is expected to primarily benefit students from Dimasa-speaking regions and represents an important institutional framework for the preservation and promotion of the Dimasa language within Assam's school education system.
