India's BHASHINI (Bhasha Interface for India) initiative has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Assam Innovation and Startup Foundation to advance regional language technology in the state. The partnership aims to make digital governance more accessible by providing AI-powered translation, speech-to-text, and multilingual services in Assamese and other local languages.
The Digital India BHASHINI Division will integrate language translation APIs into government platforms and customize AI models to understand regional dialects. Meanwhile, the Assam Innovation and Startup Foundation will identify local linguistic needs and engage startups, researchers, and academic institutions in developing language technology solutions.
This collaboration addresses a critical barrier to digital inclusion: many citizens struggle with English or Hindi-based platforms and require services in their mother tongue. The initiative also supports the *Bhashadaan* project, which collects linguistic datasets to improve AI training and translation accuracy. By combining national language technology resources with Assam's local innovation ecosystem, the MoU promises to enhance citizen service delivery while creating opportunities for entrepreneurs in the language technology space.
