The University of Cambridge has established a significant Global Tamil Studies initiative through its Centre of South Asian Studies, forming a partnership with Chennai's Roja Muthiah Research Library to digitize and share Tamil archival materials worldwide.
This pioneering collaboration aims to provide scholars with unprecedented access to historical Tamil resources, including photographs, books, drawings, films, and audio recordings that document Tamil society, economy, and culture.
A centerpiece of the initiative is the proposed Chair of Global Tamil Studies at Cambridge, which would provide sustained academic leadership for Tamil language instruction and research. Currently, no British university offers a full-time academic position dedicated to Tamil studies - a gap this initiative seeks to address.
The Tamil Nadu government has expressed support for the program, with Industries Minister TRB Rajaa noting that it will advance the global teaching, research, and preservation of "Tamil knowledge systems." Though not providing financial backing, the state government has extended non-financial support to the proposed academic chair.
