The Ministry of Home Affairs has announced Padma Shri awards for four distinguished individuals from Odisha, recognizing their significant contributions to preserving the state's cultural heritage.
Simanchal Patro, a master of Sakhi Nata folk theatre, has dedicated his life to Prahlad Natak, a demanding performance style requiring proficiency in hundreds of songs across numerous ragas. His commitment extends to selling personal property to ensure this art form's preservation.
Mahendra Kumar Mishra, an acclaimed linguist and folklorist, has documented tribal oral traditions extensively, authoring over 25 books and spearheading multilingual education initiatives in tribal languages. His work earned him UNESCO's International Mother Language Award in 2023.
Charan Hembram has championed Santhali language legitimacy for three decades, establishing institutions for tribal education and promoting indigenous dance forms among women to preserve traditional expressions.
Sarat Kumar Patra, from a traditional handloom family, creates exquisite textiles offered to Lord Jagannath during festivals. His craftsmanship previously earned him the National Award for natural tie and dye products and the Sant Kabir Award.
These awardees represent Odisha's rich cultural diversity across performance arts, linguistics, literature, and traditional crafts.
