Goa's directorate of archives will undertake comprehensive audiovisual documentation of *alayo*, traditional Konkani children's songs and oral folklore, to preserve a rapidly disappearing cultural and linguistic tradition. Education secretary Prasad Lolayekar announced the initiative at a symposium titled *Treasure Trove of Konkani Childlore: Compilation, Preservation and Research*.
Lolayekar emphasized that *alayo* captures children's distinctive vocabulary often absent from formal Konkani, including terms like *hamma* for cows and *mey-mey* for seafood. He described this as a "universal language of Konkani-speaking children" found across Goa and other states with Konkani communities.
The initiative responds to the disappearance of several folk traditions and aims to document what remains. *Alayo* serves as children's first connection with folklore and traditional culture, making its preservation particularly significant for understanding the language's full vocabulary and expressions. Previous documentation efforts covering Sattari taluka and Canacona were discontinued, underscoring the need for sustained preservation work.
