Vocabulary Checklist Developed for Malayalam Children

Vocabulary Checklist Developed for Malayalam Children

IJFMR

Researchers have successfully developed and validated a vocabulary assessment checklist specifically designed for Malayalam-speaking children aged 5-7 years. The study, conducted with 32 children from Malayalam-medium schools and preschools in Kerala, represents an important step in creating culturally and linguistically appropriate language assessment tools for Indian languages.

The checklist draws on lexical categories adapted from the *MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventory*, Malayalam school textbooks, and expert recommendations. Assessment was conducted through picture-naming tasks across different lexical categories.

Results showed that both receptive and expressive vocabulary were well established across most categories by age 5. However, researchers found a statistically significant difference in the Vegetables and Grains category, where older children demonstrated better performance.

This validated tool offers important clinical applications, including early identification of language delays, intervention planning, and a foundation for future research on Malayalam language development in young children. The culturally relevant approach ensures the assessment accurately reflects the linguistic environment of Malayalam-speaking children.
