Hi India
In recognition of the significant contributions made by Punjabi-speaking residents, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has officially designated February 2026 as "Punjabi Language Month." This proclamation coincides with UNESCO's International Mother Language Day on February 21.
With over 50,000 Punjabi speakers in Illinois and more than 750,000 nationwide, the language holds special significance as the ninth most widely spoken globally. The Punjabi Cultural Society of Chicago will celebrate with various events, including "RANGLA PUNJAB" at Chicago's Gateway Theater in April 2026.
Punjabi Americans have distinguished themselves across numerous fields - from politics to science and business. Notable figures include Dalip Singh Saund, the first Asian American elected to Congress, Nobel laureate Har Gobind Khorana, and World Bank President Ajay Banga.
Community leaders emphasize Punjabis' commitment to preserving their linguistic heritage while sharing their vibrant culture, including literature, arts, music and festivals with broader American society.
