India's Panini Linguistics Olympiad (PLO) team has returned from Romania with a gold medal and multiple honours at the International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL). Shrilakshmi Venkatraman secured gold, while Aarav Anil Rao, Nishanth Shankar Lakshmanan, and Advay Misra won bronze medals, with Soham Amit Pednekar receiving an honourable mention.

The competition, organized for pre-university students from over 40 countries, tests pattern recognition, logical reasoning, and computational thinking through challenging language puzzles. Unlike other Olympiads, it requires no prior linguistics knowledge, rewarding pure reasoning abilities instead.

IIIT Hyderabad has mentored the PLO since 2015, building on foundations laid by early pioneers including Zarana Sarda, who led India's first IOL participation in 2009. Since then, Indian students have earned an impressive 37 medals across seventeen Olympiads, including six gold, nine silver, and twenty-two bronze medals.

The initiative draws inspiration from Panini's *Ashtadhyayi*, the ancient Sanskrit grammar text that established technical linguistic vocabulary centuries before modern linguistics emerged. Today's PLO continues fostering linguistic curiosity among school students nationwide.
