At NDTV's Tamil Nadu Summit, actor-politician Kamal Haasan offered a nuanced perspective on language politics, emphasizing that cultural pride in one's language should never transform into animosity toward others.
Haasan, who heads the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) party, compared language affection to interpersonal relationships, describing it as a "two-way action" that requires mutual respect rather than imposition.
"To love my language, I don't have to hate another," Haasan remarked, addressing concerns about linguistic nationalism. He further clarified that while he takes pride in his mother tongue, this sentiment doesn't necessitate rejecting other languages.
His comments come amid ongoing debates about language policies in India, particularly regarding concerns about linguistic imposition. Haasan's position advocates for preserving individual choice, stating plainly: "Leave the choice to the people."
