Karnataka faces a troubling language education crisis as approximately 1.65 lakh students - nearly 20% of SSLC exam takers - failed Kannada, the state's official language. This alarming statistic prompted the Kannada Development Authority to establish a committee led by Professor Purushottam Bilimale to investigate.
The committee identified several critical issues undermining Kannada education. Students enter higher grades with weak foundational language skills from primary school, and a severe shortage of qualified Kannada teachers has resulted in non-language specialists being assigned to teach the subject.
Perhaps most revealing are the significant regional disparities in pass rates. Traditional Kannada-speaking regions like Mysuru reported just 68% passing rates, while coastal districts exceeded 90%, suggesting that merely speaking a language at home doesn't translate to academic proficiency without proper classroom instruction.
This situation raises important questions about language education policy and implementation across Karnataka's educational system, with implications for cultural identity and academic success.
