A seven-member study committee appointed by the Karnataka government has embarked on an investigative journey to Andhra Pradesh to understand the procedural framework for granting Tulu the status of an additional official language within Karnataka.
Led by Kannada and Culture Department Director K M Gayathri and Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy president Taranath Gatti Kapikad, the committee conducted visits to Amaravati and NTR district on January 19 and 20. The initiative seeks to examine how Andhra Pradesh successfully implemented the recognition of Urdu as an additional official language.
This research aims to ensure that elevating Tulu's status would foster the language's growth and development while simultaneously protecting Telugu's position. By studying a successful precedent, Karnataka hopes to adopt a similar administrative and legal framework that respects linguistic diversity without undermining any existing official language.
