The Karnataka State Policy and Planning Commission is pushing for greater focus on the intersection of language and culture in higher education. Member S Mohanadass Hegde has submitted a proposal to introduce discipline-specific elective papers on linguistic anthropology for master's students in relevant humanities and social science programmes.
The initiative is particularly relevant for Karnataka, given the state's rich linguistic diversity that includes numerous tribal communities. Hegde emphasized that such a course would create opportunities for research in critical areas like language preservation, cultural heritage documentation, and understanding social change through linguistic patterns.
The proposal represents an effort to strengthen interdisciplinary education by bridging linguistics, anthropology, and cultural studies. By promoting academic research on the relationship among language, culture, and society, the initiative could contribute to preserving endangered languages and documenting the state's linguistic heritage for future generations.
