Maharashtra's government is taking a constructive approach to language integration by developing a Marathi learning app for migrants, shifting away from punitive measures. Marathi Bhasha Minister Uday Samant stated, "It is no use beating up people for not speaking Marathi. It is better to teach them to speak the language."
The app will be accompanied by physical classes across the state and is expected to launch by year-end. The curriculum is currently under preparation.
In a parallel initiative, the state cabinet approved Rs 5 crore to purchase a historic building in London that has housed the Maharashtra Mandal since 1991. The building will be renamed Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vaishvik Marathi Bhasah Kendra and serve as a global Marathi language centre. With approximately one lakh Marathi speakers in the surrounding area, the centre will offer language classes for diaspora communities and their children.
