The Marathi Aai Initiative (MAI), a Fremont-based organization, has launched "The MAI Store", a national merchandise platform designed to generate sustainable funding for its Marathi language and cultural programs. The Shopify-based store serves over 1,500 families across the United States, helping children in the diaspora maintain connections to their linguistic and cultural heritage.
Led by community member Neha Joshi, the initiative emerged from conversations about building reliable revenue streams as MAI's programs expand. The project was developed entirely by volunteers within the MAI community, many of them mothers balancing work, family, and community leadership roles.
Co-founder Dr. Sayli Natu emphasized the volunteer-driven nature of the organization's success. While the initial phase focuses on MAI-themed merchandise, organizers plan to expand the platform to feature products from Marathi-owned small and mid-sized businesses nationwide, potentially creating a broader marketplace celebrating Marathi identity and entrepreneurship in the diaspora.
