The Marathi Abhyas Kendra, an organization dedicated to promoting Marathi-medium education, met with BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani following their protest against the declining number of Marathi schools in Mumbai.
During the meeting, language activists presented several proposals, including establishing study centers at anganwadis throughout the city and forming a Marathi Language Conservation Committee. They also strongly opposed the privatization of civic schools, urging the BMC to halt this practice immediately.
The BMC responded with assurances that they remain committed to supporting Marathi education, highlighting the impressive 95% success rate of Marathi schools in 10th standard examinations held in March 2025. Officials emphasized ongoing quality improvement initiatives and stated that no schools have been privatized yet.
Despite these assurances, the delegates from Marathi Abhyas Kendra expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome, particularly noting that decisions to close several Marathi-medium schools were not reversed during the discussions.
