Subodh Khanolkar's Dashavatar, a Marathi film starring Dilip Prabhavalkar, has achieved a historic milestone by being selected for the Oscar 2026 main competition category. This marks the first time a Marathi film has made it to this prestigious list.
Director Khanolkar expressed his pride on Instagram, highlighting that the film was selected from thousands of submissions, with only 150+ films making the contention list. He emphasized that Dashavatar is not only the first Marathi film in the main competition but also the first to be screened in the Academy Screening Room, demonstrating that our Marathi cinema can stand up to the world's competition.
The film's box office success in India further validates its quality, having collected Rs. 24.18 crore against a budget of Rs. 5 crore. While Homebound serves as India's official Oscar entry, Dashavatar was submitted independently. This achievement demonstrates that strong storytelling transcends language barriers and regional boundaries.
