The Mizoram government plans to introduce a monthly Hindi speaking day across all schools to address language barriers faced by Mizos in other parts of India, Education Minister Vanlalthlana announced on Tuesday.
During these designated days, students and teachers will be required to converse in Hindi, with the State Council of Educational Research and Training preparing special spoken Hindi materials. The initiative aims to enhance employment opportunities for Mizoram students seeking jobs elsewhere in the country.
The minister noted that Hindi proficiency is particularly challenging in the state where Mizo and English are the official languages, and Hindi speakers are few.
Alongside this measure, the government will also implement a weekly home language day in English-medium schools, allowing students to communicate in their mother tongues during recesses to preserve local languages amid growing English usage.
Additionally, all government teachers with more than five years before retirement will need to clear the Teacher Eligibility Test within two years, in compliance with Supreme Court guidelines.
