The Odisha government has formally initiated a significant linguistic correction campaign to restore the authentic Odia names of various administrative divisions across the state. This includes districts, subdivisions, blocks, tehsils, and municipalities whose original names were distorted through inaccurate English transliteration.
According to officials, many place names suffered alterations due to British colonial influence and other transliteration errors over time. Odia scholar Suprabha Panda noted that this restoration will "help preserve the linguistic integrity and cultural identity" of these locations.
The initiative spans multiple districts including Deogarh, Kandhamal, Khordha, Angul, Cuttack, Kendrapara, Keonjhar, Sambalpur, Nayagarh, Balasore, and Malkangiri. The state administration has prepared a detailed annexure listing locations where "misspelling" has been identified as the primary form of distortion.
This move represents a significant step toward reclaiming Odisha's cultural heritage through linguistic authenticity.
