The Sahitya Akademi has conferred its highest honor, the Fellowship, upon three distinguished writers representing India's linguistic diversity. The recipients are Pratibha Ray (Odia), Lakhmi Khilani (Sindhi), and Abdus Samad (Urdu).
Pratibha Ray, a towering figure in Odia literature with over 50 books spanning five decades, is celebrated for her profound storytelling and social commentary. Her seminal novel *Yajnaseni*, a retelling of the Mahabharata from Draupadi's perspective, has been translated into multiple languages. Ray has previously received the Jnanpith Award and Sahitya Akademi Award.
The recognition of writers across Odia, Sindhi, and Urdu traditions underscores the Akademi's commitment to honoring India's multilingual literary heritage. The Fellowship, an exceptionally rare distinction, is reserved for writers who have made lasting contributions to Indian literature. This announcement reaffirms the importance of preserving and celebrating linguistic diversity in India's cultural landscape.
