The Tamil Literature Society commemorated its platinum jubilee at St. Joseph's College, reflecting on 75 years of dedication to Tamil language and literature promotion. Speakers highlighted the organization's significant contributions to fostering Tamil literary scholarship and critical thought.
Founded in 1948 by Xavier Thaninayagam Adigal, a priest and distinguished Tamil scholar from the Thoothukudi diocese, the society has been instrumental in advancing Tamil studies globally. Thaninayagam Adigal's visionary leadership extended beyond the society's establishment - he pioneered the World Tamil Conference movement and founded Tamil research institutions that continue to serve scholars today.
His most notable achievement was organizing the first five International Tamil conferences, creating platforms for Tamil scholars worldwide to collaborate and exchange ideas. These conferences helped establish Tamil as a language of international academic importance and fostered a global community of Tamil literary scholars.
