Government Middle School at Thennur in Tiruchi has launched an innovative Conversation Log method to strengthen language proficiency among students in Classes 5-8. This practical approach requires students to document daily conversations both inside and outside the classroom, creating a bridge between textbook learning and authentic communication.
The programme targets improvement in vocabulary, grammar, and confidence in both English and Tamil. Teachers review student entries daily, providing corrections that reinforce proper usage and sentence formation. According to S. Sivakumar, retired Principal of the District Institute of Education and Training, the method encourages students to reflect on how they communicate and helps them become more mindful of their language use.
Early results are promising, with teachers reporting increased classroom engagement and greater willingness among students to express their thoughts. The school plans to expand this initiative to other institutions as a model for promoting practical language skills in Indian education.
