Tripura has launched an ambitious initiative to bring the Chakma language to Google Translate by compiling a comprehensive database of 50,000 words. The announcement was made during the state's first Chakma Language and Script Day celebration in Agartala.
The state currently teaches Chakma in 123 government schools, reaching over 4,000 students from Classes I through VIII with support from 172 teachers. Free textbooks are distributed by the State Council of Educational Research and Training. Officials plan to extend instruction to secondary and higher secondary levels.
Industries and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma emphasized that *script is the torchbearer of culture, and language is the foundation of identity*. She proposed introducing Chakma script in Anganwadi centers to strengthen early childhood learning, positioning it alongside Bengali and Kokborok.
Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury highlighted that Tripura supports 19 indigenous communities, demonstrating the state's commitment to preserving minority linguistic traditions through education and technology. The initiative reflects growing recognition that mother tongue preservation secures cultural heritage for future generations.
