Renowned archivist Aparna Subramanian has made an impassioned plea to the Chalanachitra Academy to prioritize the restoration and preservation of Kannada cinema. Speaking in Bengaluru, she emphasized that films are not merely entertainment but crucial historical documents that capture cultural evolution.
Subramanian outlined the comprehensive film restoration process, from initial assessment and cleaning to digitization and long-term storage protocols. She highlighted that proper preservation requires climate-controlled environments and ongoing maintenance to ensure data integrity over decades.
The archivist identified several challenges specific to Kannada film preservation, including inadequate storage conditions and limited funding. However, she expressed optimism that increased public awareness and institutional collaborations could overcome these obstacles.
Her advocacy underscores the urgent need to protect Karnataka's cinematic heritage before irreversible deterioration occurs, ensuring these cultural treasures remain accessible to future generations through educational programs and digital platforms.
