The "Sarth Gujarati Jodni Kosh", originally inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's vision for a standardized Gujarati lexicon, is undergoing its first major revision since 2017. Gujarat Vidyapith is spearheading the update, incorporating approximately 2,200 new entries - predominantly technology-related terms such as 'algorithm', 'internet', 'surfing', and 'upload' - to align the dictionary with the digital age.

The initiative, led by chief editor Dr Arvind Bhandari and convener Professor Dhwanil Parekh, invites public participation through word submissions until March 31. This community-driven approach mirrors historical precedents like the "Bhagwat Gomandal Kosh" encyclopaedia.

Beyond adding contemporary vocabulary, editors plan to review archaic terms and expand definitions of traditional concepts, including detailed explanations of games like 'Ambli-Pipli'. The lexicographers are deliberately avoiding forced translations, instead reflecting natural language usage across fields from commerce to information technology.

First published in 1929, this update positions Gujarati as a living, thriving language equipped to flourish in an era of artificial intelligence and global connectivity.
