The 2026 Padma Awards, announced on Republic Day eve, honor eight remarkable individuals from Karnataka whose contributions exemplify nation-building through dedicated service rather than fame.
Shatavadhani R Ganesh received the Padma Bhushan for reviving ancient Sanskrit performance arts, while seven others earned Padma Shri recognition: Ankegowda M transformed his passion for books into a free library housing two million volumes; Dr. S.G. Susheelamma, often called *Mother Teresa of Karnataka*, has served vulnerable populations since 1975.
Dr. Suresh Hanagavadi established Karnataka's first hemophilia treatment center despite living with the condition himself. Other honorees include Shashi Shekhar Vempati for modernizing public broadcasting, Prabhakar Kore for expanding educational access through 300+ institutions, Shubha Iyengar for developing indigenous aviation safety systems, and the late T.T. Jagannathan for pioneering pressure cooker safety technology.
These awardees represent achievement measured by lives touched rather than applause earned - quiet architects of change working in classrooms, hospitals, cultural spaces and marginalized communities.
