A political controversy has erupted in Thane over the alleged absence of Marathi language instruction at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Kolset. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has raised concerns that the central school neither offers Marathi as a subject nor employs qualified teachers, potentially violating state regulations that mandate Marathi education in all schools within Maharashtra.

Following a formal complaint filed in February 2026 by MNS student wing representatives, the Thane Municipal Corporation's education department has intervened. Officials have issued strict directives to the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan's regional office, demanding immediate compliance with state policy. Authorities have mandated that Marathi must be introduced as a second language from the 2026-27 academic year, warning of administrative consequences for non-compliance.

MNS leaders have emphasized that Marathi, recognized as a classical language, is central to Maharashtra's cultural identity and must be preserved through education. Party representative Sandeep Pachange warned of *"a strong agitation"* if the issue remains unresolved, arguing that excluding Marathi from central schools could weaken students' cultural connections to the state.
