Aria University in Milpitas, California, stands as a unique institution promoting Indian languages and culture in the United States. Founded by Anand Kuchibhotla, a native of Andhra Pradesh who immigrated in 1987, the university represents the first overseas institution established by a Telugu person with a cultural mission.
The accredited university, which began classes in January 2017, currently serves around 500 students. Its curriculum uniquely blends traditional Indian studies with contemporary fields, offering courses in MA Sanskrit and philosophy alongside technology and business programs. Students can study classical arts like Bharatanatyam and violin, as well as traditional Telugu storytelling forms including "Harikatha" and "Burrakatha".
The institution teaches Telugu language fundamentals, including "Padya" and "Geya" (lyrical writing), creative writing, and playwriting. Additional programs cover yoga, Ayurveda, and natural medicine. Future plans include introducing the "Y4Y" (Yoga for Youth) program in US schools and launching a PhD program in Kuchipudi dance, further cementing the university's commitment to preserving and promoting Indian cultural heritage abroad.
